| Description | Only the seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek) have been used as food within the EU before 15 May 1997. Fenugreek ( Trigonella foenum-graecum ) is a plant in the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae, subfam. Papilionoideae). It is indigenous to countries on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean and cultivated in India, Egypt and Africa. The cuboid yellow to amber coloured fenugreek seeds are frequently used in the preparation of pickles, curry powders, and pastes, and the spice is often encountered in the cuisine of the Indian subcontinent. |
